What’s Hiding In Your Data?

Think you know everything about your delivery process? Think again.

Your data holds valuable insights into the real reasons your delivery is struggling... if you know where to look.

Poorly defined work leads to bottlenecks

What to look for: Work that keeps moving backwards or stalling in your workflow. This often signals confusion around user stories or requirements that are unclear to the team. The result? Delays, rework, and frustrated teams.

Work that’s too big slows everything down

What to look for: Compare cycle time and defect rates for smaller vs. larger pieces of work. Big work items tend to take longer, introduce more errors, and increase the risk of delays. Breaking them down could speed things up.

Unplanned work disrupts everything

What to look for: Compare what your team planned to deliver with what they actually delivered. Unplanned work sneaks in (pesky stakeholders!), derailing sprints and adding chaos. This gap can reveal where priorities are shifting unexpectedly.

Overloaded team members can’t perform at their best

What to look for: Pay attention to how work is allocated. Are certain team members getting too much while others are underutilised? An uneven distribution of work can lead to burnout and missed deadlines.

Context switching and wasted effort sap productivity (and motivation)

What to look for: High levels of work in progress (WIP). If team members are juggling too many tasks at once, it leads to wasted effort and decreased focus. Reducing WIP can boost productivity and help teams deliver faster.

Your data has the answers… if you know where to look.

The issues aren’t always obvious, but the data is there. Spotting the root-cause patterns gives you chance to take action that will have a positive impact.
